5x7 Concrete Above Ground Storm Shelter Features

Our manufacturer takes pride in their work and it shows in the craftsmanship of the safe rooms we install. Above ground storm shelters installed by Sprague’s Backhoe are built to withstand an F5 tornado. Each 5×7 above ground safe room has the following features:

Each 5×7 above ground storm shelter installed by Sprague’s Backhoe includes a stamped rock pattern and a steel powder coated door, which will help minimize rusting.

To maximize air flow in each safe room, there is an 8″ turbine, a 3″ vent and a vent in the door on each unit.

Our 5×7 above ground storm shelters are 6,000 PSI reinforced pre-cast concrete with 1/2″ rebar on 10″ centers and anchored down with (6) 3′ metal anchors.

This safe room weighs approximately 16,000 pounds and per the engineer, once anchored, the downward force of the anchors increase the weight to approximately 150,000 pounds.

The doors are vertically reinforced steel with a triple latch system and has been tested at Texas Tech University.

All 5×7 safe rooms installed by Sprague’s Backhoe meet or exceed FEMA 320 & ICC 500 guidelines.

When it comes to protecting your family and property from severe weather, having a storm shelter is a must in Oklahoma. With its location in the heart of Tornado Alley, the state is prone to severe weather conditions such as tornadoes and severe thunderstorms. Check out our comparison of above ground and below ground storm shelters and take our poll to see which one is more popular!

It is the homeowner’s responsibility to obtain a storm shelter permit from their city office, if required, but each city has different requirements and pricing. Visit our storm shelter permits blog post or call your city office for more information.

Our above ground storm shelters are specifically designed for outdoor installation and secure anchoring into the ground, ensuring maximum protection and accessibility during severe weather events.

Currently, they aren’t. The stamped design seen above is the only available design for the 5×7 above ground storm shelter. This is something we are looking into offering in the future.

To drive in, if it’s a straight shot, we need at least 10′ wide (from the eaves of the house) and 14′ tall. To offload the above ground safe room, the crane will need up to 25′ of clearance and approximately 16′-18′ wide to set the truck stabilizer legs.
