Underground Storm Shelter Features

When you choose Sprague’s Backhoe, you’re getting more than a hole in the ground — you’re getting a high-quality, Oklahoma-made shelter built to protect your family for years to come.

01

Design

Every underground storm shelter we install includes a stamped rock pattern lid and a powder-coated steel door and steps to help reduce rust over time.

To maximize airflow, each unit comes with an 8” turbine and a 3” vent — keeping your shelter ventilated and comfortable.

02

safety

Our shelters are made from 6,000 PSI reinforced pre-cast concrete with ½” rebar on 10″ centers.

Each door is vertically reinforced steel with a triple-latch locking system and has been tested at Texas Tech University for debris impact resistance.

All shelters meet or exceed FEMA 320 and ICC 500 standards.

03

warranty

Storm shelters with a sloped front come with a 10 year limited manufacturer’s warranty.

Flat top storm shelters come with a 5 year limited manufacturer’s warranty.

04

Bonus features

Every shelter is delivered as a one-piece unit, made right here in Oklahoma.

The base of each unit is coated in Epro, a water-resistant sealant that adds an extra layer of moisture protection.

Additional Information About Storm Shelter Installations

Scheduling

During the fall and winter months, most safe room installations can be scheduled within 6–8 weeks of your initial call.
During spring and summer — Oklahoma's busiest storm seasons — scheduling may take 6 months or longer.
Please note: rain, snow, and severe weather can also cause unexpected delays.

OKIE 811

Sprague’s Backhoe will contact OKIE 811 before we start your installation to locate public utility lines.
IMPORTANT: OKIE 811 does not locate private lines, including gas lines from the meter to the house, water lines, sewer lines, septic systems, sprinkler systems. It is the homeowner’s responsibility to know the location of any private lines.

Storm Shelter Permits

If your city requires a storm shelter permit, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to obtain it before installation. Permit requirements and pricing vary by city. (For more details, check the specific service area page for your location!)

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?

No pressure — we're here when you're ready. Give us a call or send us a message, and we’ll help you figure out the next step.

FAQ

Yes! Every storm shelter we install meets or exceeds FEMA 320 and ICC 500 guidelines for safety and construction standards.

The best time to purchase a storm shelter is during the off-season, typically between September and February.
Buying during these months helps you avoid longer wait times and weather delays.

Don’t wait until spring if you want your shelter installed before storm season begins — by then, our schedule is often booked months in advance.
(And remember, in Oklahoma, weather can turn severe earlier than expected!)

Storm shelters can add value to your home by offering safety, peace of mind, and a strong selling point for potential buyers.
However, the exact impact depends on factors like the type of shelter, your location, and the local housing market.
