Tornado shelter

A tornado shelter is a reinforced structure designed to provide protection from tornadoes and severe storms, keeping occupants safe from extreme winds and debris.

What is a Tornado Shelter?

A tornado shelter is a specially designed, reinforced space built to protect individuals from the dangers of tornadoes and extreme weather conditions. These shelters are constructed to withstand high winds, flying debris, and structural collapses, ensuring maximum safety during severe storms.

Tornado shelters can be above-ground or underground, with both types offering robust protection. Underground tornado shelters are typically installed in garages, basements, or outdoor areas and provide safety by positioning occupants below the surface. Above-ground tornado shelters, often made of reinforced steel or concrete, are ideal for homes and businesses that cannot accommodate underground shelters.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Storm Shelter Association (NSSA) have set specific standards for tornado shelters to ensure they meet high safety standards. Certified shelters can withstand winds exceeding 250 mph, offering protection even from EF5 tornadoes.

Families and businesses in tornado-prone regions, such as Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas, often invest in tornado shelters to ensure safety. Having a shelter readily accessible during a storm can be a life-saving measure, reducing the risk of injuries and fatalities caused by severe weather.

Installation & Service Area Info

We proudly install storm shelters across Oklahoma only — we do not travel to other states, and we’re unable to make exceptions — but there are a few things to know:

  • Above ground shelter installations over 60 miles from our office in Bridge Creek may include a delivery charge.

  • Below ground shelter installations are typically limited to a 60-mile radius, though we occasionally go a bit farther with an additional fee.

  • We do not install or remove storm shelters inside garages.
