Jet Stream

Jet stream is a fast-moving, narrow air current in the upper atmosphere that influences weather patterns, including storm development and severe weather events.

What is Jet Stream?

A jet stream is a high-altitude air current that moves rapidly through the Earth’s atmosphere. These winds typically flow from west to east at speeds that can exceed 200 miles per hour. Jet streams form at the boundaries of different air masses, such as warm tropical air meeting cold polar air, and play a crucial role in shaping weather patterns.

Jet streams significantly influence the development and movement of storms, including tornadoes. When a strong jet stream interacts with unstable air near the surface, it can enhance storm rotation, increasing the likelihood of severe weather. This is particularly important for tornado formation, as the wind shear created by jet streams helps initiate and sustain rotating storm systems.

During extreme weather events, changes in the jet stream’s position can determine whether a region experiences prolonged storms, intense heat waves, or persistent cold spells. For example, a southward dip in the jet stream can bring cold Arctic air deep into the U.S., while a strong ridge can cause prolonged dry and hot conditions.

For those considering storm shelters or safe rooms, understanding jet stream patterns can help predict severe weather risks. By monitoring jet stream activity, meteorologists can provide more accurate tornado and storm forecasts, allowing individuals and communities to take necessary precautions.

Installation & Service Area Info

We proudly install storm shelters across Oklahoma only — we do not travel to other states, and we’re unable to make exceptions — but there are a few things to know:

  • Above ground shelter installations over 60 miles from our office in Bridge Creek may include a delivery charge.

  • Below ground shelter installations are typically limited to a 60-mile radius, though we occasionally go a bit farther with an additional fee.

  • We do not install or remove storm shelters inside garages.
