What is an F-3 Tornado?
An F-3 tornado is classified as a severe tornado on the Fujita Scale, which measures tornado intensity based on wind speed and damage. F-3 tornadoes have wind speeds ranging from 158 to 206 mph and are known for their immense destructive power.
These tornadoes can severely damage buildings, uproot large trees, and toss heavy vehicles through the air. Houses and smaller structures may experience partial or complete roof removal, while some walls may collapse. Mobile homes and poorly built structures are often completely destroyed.
F-3 tornadoes pose a serious threat to life and property, making storm shelters and safe rooms essential for protection. Above-ground and underground shelters provide secure refuge from these powerful storms, significantly increasing survival chances during an outbreak.
While less catastrophic than F-4 or F-5 tornadoes, an F-3 tornado can still leave entire neighborhoods unrecognizable, making emergency preparedness critical in tornado-prone regions.
