What is an F-1 Tornado?
An F-1 tornado is classified as a moderate tornado on the Fujita Scale, with wind speeds ranging from 73 to 112 mph. These tornadoes are stronger than F-0 tornadoes but still considered relatively weak compared to higher-rated storms. However, an F-1 tornado can cause significant damage to structures, vehicles, and vegetation.
Damage from an F-1 tornado often includes roof damage to homes, broken windows, and mobile homes being overturned or severely damaged. Trees may be uprooted, and vehicles can be pushed off roads or flipped in stronger gusts. While not typically life-threatening if proper shelter is taken, F-1 tornadoes can still cause injuries and destruction in their path.
F-1 tornadoes are a reminder that even lower-rated tornadoes can be dangerous. Installing a storm shelter or safe room is an effective way to protect yourself and your family from these storms. Underground storm shelters and above-ground safe rooms provide reliable protection, even from an F-1 tornado’s winds and flying debris.
