What is an F-0 Tornado?
An F-0 tornado is classified as the weakest category on the Fujita Scale, which measures tornado intensity based on damage assessment. With wind speeds ranging from 40 to 72 miles per hour (mph), F-0 tornadoes are generally not life-threatening but can still cause localized damage.
Although F-0 tornadoes are often considered weak, they can snap small tree branches, damage chimneys, peel off roof shingles, and overturn light outdoor objects. They typically leave minimal structural damage compared to stronger tornadoes.
These tornadoes are most common and can form quickly during severe thunderstorms. While they usually dissipate rapidly, their winds can be dangerous for small outdoor structures, mobile homes, and loose debris.
People should still take precautions, especially if they are outdoors or near lightweight structures. Storm shelters or safe rooms are not usually necessary for F-0 tornadoes, but staying informed and having a weather alert system in place is always advisable.
