What is an EF-2 Tornado?
An EF-2 tornado is a classification on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale, used to measure tornado intensity based on wind speed and resulting damage. EF-2 tornadoes have estimated wind speeds between 111 and 135 mph, making them strong and dangerous.
These tornadoes can tear roofs off well-built homes, demolish mobile homes, overturn vehicles, and snap or uproot large trees. While not the most extreme category, EF-2 tornadoes pose a serious threat to life and property, especially in areas without proper storm shelters.
Surviving an EF-2 tornado often depends on seeking adequate shelter. Above-ground safe rooms and underground storm shelters provide the best protection. Residents in tornado-prone regions should have a safety plan and access to a secure shelter to stay protected.
Tornadoes of this strength can last several minutes to over an hour, depending on conditions. After an EF-2 tornado, communities may experience power outages, road blockages, and structural damage, requiring extensive cleanup and repair efforts.
