What is an EF-1 Tornado?
An EF-1 tornado is classified on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale, which measures tornado intensity based on estimated wind speeds and resulting damage. EF-1 tornadoes have wind speeds between 86 and 110 mph, making them stronger than EF-0 tornadoes but significantly weaker than EF-2 or higher categories.
Despite being on the lower end of the scale, an EF-1 tornado can still cause moderate damage. This includes tearing shingles off roofs, breaking windows, toppling small trees, flipping mobile homes, and pushing vehicles off roads. While not typically life-threatening if proper precautions are taken, EF-1 tornadoes can still be hazardous, especially to poorly built structures and outdoor objects.
Tornado shelters and safe rooms provide critical protection against EF-1 tornadoes. While a well-built home may withstand an EF-1 tornado with some damage, people caught outdoors or in mobile homes face a much higher risk. Installing an underground storm shelter or above-ground safe room ensures safety during severe weather events.
