American Meteorological Society

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing meteorology, atmospheric sciences, and weather safety.

What is the American Meteorological Society?

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) is a leading organization in the United States focused on the advancement of meteorology, climatology, and related sciences. Established in 1919, the AMS promotes scientific research, education, and the dissemination of weather-related information to professionals and the public.

The society plays a crucial role in setting standards for meteorological education and certification. It offers professional certifications such as the Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) and Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM), ensuring that weather professionals meet high standards of expertise.

AMS also organizes conferences, publishes scientific journals, and collaborates with government agencies to improve weather forecasting and public safety. Their work is especially important in severe weather preparedness, helping communities understand and mitigate the risks associated with tornadoes, hurricanes, and other extreme weather events.

For storm shelter providers like Sprague’s Backhoe, the AMS’s research and forecasts contribute to the development of safer, more resilient storm shelters and emergency planning strategies. Their data helps improve the design and placement of tornado shelters and safe rooms, ensuring better protection during severe weather.

Installation & Service Area Info

We proudly install storm shelters across Oklahoma only — we do not travel to other states, and we’re unable to make exceptions — but there are a few things to know:

  • Above ground shelter installations over 60 miles from our office in Bridge Creek may include a delivery charge.

  • Below ground shelter installations are typically limited to a 60-mile radius, though we occasionally go a bit farther with an additional fee.

  • We do not install or remove storm shelters inside garages.

➡️ Please check our Service Area page for more details about where we travel.
