How to Choose the Right Storm Shelter Size and Location in Oklahoma

If you’re installing a storm shelter in Oklahoma, two of the biggest questions are:

  • What size do I need?

  • Where should I put it in my yard?

As one of the top-rated storm shelter installers in Oklahoma, we’ve helped thousands of families answer both. Here’s what we recommend when choosing the right size and location for your shelter—and how to avoid common mistakes that can delay installation.

🏡 1. Location: Close to Home, But Accessible for Install

The #1 rule when choosing a location for your storm shelter?
The closer to your home, the better.

During a tornado warning, you want to be able to reach your shelter quickly—especially if you have young kids, pets, or family members with mobility needs. Most of our customers choose a spot in their front or back yard just a few steps from their door.

But there’s one important detail to keep in mind:

We need clear access for our equipment.
Our trucks and backhoe must be able to reach the site without tight turns, fences in the way, or steep terrain. If access allows, we can install your shelter in just about any location.

📏 2. Choosing the Right Size Shelter

Storm shelters aren’t one-size-fits-all. The best size depends on:

  • The number of people in your household

  • Whether you need space for pets, medical equipment, or supplies

  • Your available yard space

  • Any mobility considerations

💬 Not sure what size is best for your family?
Take our quick quiz: Which storm shelter should I get?

Our Most Popular Sizes:

  • 5×7 – Small but mighty; fits 4–5 people comfortably

  • 6×8 – The sweet spot for most families; fits 6–8 people

  • 7×10 – Best for large families or those wanting more room

Need something easier to access that’s below ground? Our Easy Access Shelter is a below-ground favorite with wide steps and a taller entrance.

🌿 3. Don’t Forget the Look and Feel of Your Yard

We get it—storm shelters are a functional addition, but you still care about curb appeal.

Our above ground storm shelters are designed with stamped concrete to blend in with your outdoor space. Whether you tuck it alongside your garage or place it in a landscaped corner of your yard, we’ll help you choose a location that looks intentional—not like an afterthought.

🔨 4. Why Precast Storm Shelters Are a Smart Choice

Every shelter we install is:

  • Precast concrete for strength and durability

  • Engineered to exceed FEMA 320 and ICC-500 guidelines

  • Anchored securely and tested for Oklahoma conditions

We don’t install anything we wouldn’t use ourselves—and yes, we have a storm shelter at our own home too.
