Above Ground vs Below Ground Storm Shelters: Which Is Right for You?

When it comes to protecting your family during severe weather, choosing the right shelter is critical—especially in Oklahoma, where tornadoes are a yearly threat. In this guide, we’ll compare above ground vs below ground storm shelters, focusing on precast concrete options, so you can decide which one is best for your home, your budget, and your peace of mind.

Above Ground Storm Shelters: Safe, Accessible, and Stylish

Above ground storm shelters are gaining popularity in Oklahoma—and for good reason.

  • Less Disruption to Your Property: These shelters require minimal dirt work and site prep, making installation faster and less invasive.

  • Ideal for Accessibility: With ground-level entry, they’re a great option for families with older adults, individuals with mobility challenges, or small children.

  • Tested and Trusted: High-quality precast above ground shelters are tested to meet or exceed FEMA standards and are built to withstand even EF5 tornadoes.

  • Curb Appeal: Many above ground shelters feature decorative stamped concrete designs, adding beauty and functionality to your outdoor space.

Quick, easy access during storms can make a major difference when seconds matter.

Below Ground Storm Shelters: Discreet and Budget-Friendly

Below ground storm shelters remain a traditional choice for many homeowners who prefer an underground option.

  • More Privacy: Tucked below ground, these shelters are out of sight and less visually intrusive.

  • Lower Upfront Cost: In many cases, below ground options are more budget-friendly than their above ground counterparts.

  • Effective Storm Protection: Like above ground shelters, precast below ground storm shelters are tested to FEMA standards and offer excellent protection from debris and high winds.

However, they may not be ideal for those with mobility issues due to stairs or ladders required for entry.

Precast Concrete Storm Shelters: A Solid Choice Either Way

Whether you choose an above ground or below ground option, precast storm shelters offer serious advantages:

  • Factory-Made Consistency: Precast shelters are built in controlled environments to ensure structural integrity.

  • Quick Installation: Since they’re delivered ready to install, there’s no on-site construction delay.

  • FEMA-Rated Safety: All shelters installed by Sprague’s Backhoe are built to meet or exceed FEMA’s stringent standards.

With turnaround times typically ranging from 2 to 8 months depending on the season and storm activity, it’s smart to plan ahead—our precast shelters are built to last and worth the wait.

Key Factors to Consider Before You Decide

When comparing above ground vs below ground storm shelters, think about:

  1. Budget: Below ground options tend to be more affordable.

  2. Accessibility: Above ground shelters are easier to enter quickly.

  3. Space and Landscape: Above ground shelters preserve your yard; below ground requires excavation.

  4. Aesthetic: Above ground shelters can blend beautifully with your outdoor design.

  5. Peace of Mind: Both provide equal protection when properly built and installed.

🧠 Tip: Always verify that your shelter meets FEMA standards and is installed by a fully insured, experienced company.
